How to Track QR Code Scans and Turn Data into Growth

Learn how scan analytics — device type, city, peak hours, and language — help restaurant owners and marketers make smarter decisions.

Why QR Code Analytics Matter

Most businesses print QR codes and hope for the best. But without tracking, you have no idea whether anyone is scanning them — or when, where, and how.

ModeQR's Business plan gives you 14 days of rich scan data for every QR code you create. Here's how to use it.

What You Can Track

Every scan records:

  • Device type — mobile, tablet, or desktop
  • Operating system — iOS vs Android tells you a lot about your audience
  • Browser — Chrome, Safari, Samsung Browser, etc.
  • Country and city — where your scans are coming from
  • Peak hour — when your audience is most active
  • Language — the browser's language setting

Reading the Data

Go to Dashboard → Analytics. You'll see weekly scan counts, a 7-day trend chart, and breakdowns by device, city, and language.

The Weekly Growth Badge

If you just started tracking, you'll see a "First Scans Tracked 🚀" badge — your baseline is set. From week two onward, you'll see percentage growth (or decline).

A +35% week means your placement is working. A −10% week might mean a poster moved, a table number changed, or foot traffic dropped.

Peak Hour Insight

If your QR menu is scanned most between 12:00–14:00, that's your lunch rush. If the evening shift sees almost no scans, your dinner tables might need better QR placement — bigger print, better lighting, or a frame with a call-to-action.

City Breakdown

Seeing scans from a city 50 km away? You probably have customers who travelled or shared your link online. This opens up targeted promotions for those locations.

Language Distribution

If 30% of your scans come from browsers set to German, it might be time to add a German version of your menu or at least a welcome note.

Per-QR Breakdown

Each QR code has its own stats. In the analytics page, expand the "View Details" section under any QR code to see its individual scan history. Useful when you have multiple menus, multiple locations, or seasonal campaigns running in parallel.

The Weekly Email Report

ModeQR's Business plan sends you a summary every Monday morning:

  • Total scans this week vs last week
  • Your single highest-traffic day
  • Your top-performing QR code
  • Average review rating (if you have the review system enabled)

No need to log in to stay informed. The report lands in your inbox automatically.

Acting on the Data

Here's a simple checklist for each week:

  1. Check growth trend — up or down vs last week?
  2. Check peak hour — is your QR code visible during that time?
  3. Check device split — if 90%+ mobile, make sure your landing page is mobile-optimised
  4. Check top city — any surprises? Any opportunity?
  5. Review language data — is your content serving your real audience?

Small changes based on real data compound over time. That's the difference between hoping your QR codes work and knowing they do.
